Southern Gap was a lot of fun-from singing Grasshopper Sparrows, Goldfinches
munching on Timothy grass, sunning rabbits to a Robin carrying more worms than
seemed possible! Of course there were lots more to see and hear that I couldn't
record such as turkeys running across the trail, Bobwhite Quail calling,
Prairie Warblers singing, Field Sparrows singing everywhere-maybe more than
Grasshopper Sparrows, Common Yellowthroat and Yellow-breasted Chat singing,
Indigo Bunting, Orchard Oriole, Horned Lark, Meadowlark and from down in the
hollow Scarlet Tanager, Kentucky and Hooded Warbler announced their presence!
After getting a picture of a juvenile Brown-headed Cowbird, I decided to drive
over to Flannagan and check the area for Eagles. A juvenile Bald Eagle flew to
a nearly hidden perch not far from the nest site right after I got there. It
was the only one seen. The Common Mergansers were seen from the bridge at
Bartlick. I saw some in the same place last summer. Good ending to a very
enjoyable morning.
PS- I just heard a Great-horned Owl calling outside. That's unusual here in
summer.
