I made the pilgrimage this year to the festival in Sierra Vista. While I only
birded 2 1/2 days, I saw a lot of nice birds and met many nice people. My
favorites were Painted Redstart, Hepatic Tanager, Burrowing Owls, White-tailed
Kites and I really like Lark Buntings. Due to some heavy rains that had fallen
in the past week, getting into Garden Canyon to look for Trogans was not an
easy option.Interestingly, I birded with our old buddy Ted Mouras down to Kino
Springs, Patagonia State Park, Pattons. We did see 76 species that day
including Violet-crowned Hummingbird and 2 Brown Pelicans that had been blown
in to Patagonia State Park. My second day I birded with Richard Frey, a very
funny and talented birder from England. We went primarily to Las Cienegas
National Conservation Area, a huge grassland. White Tailed Kites, Burrowing
Owls, Gray Flycatcher, Lark Buntings were the highlights for this
trip.Yesterday I birded in Ramsey's Canyon where I saw Hepatic Tanager, Arizona
Woodpecker, Sulfur-bellied Flycatcher, Mexican Jays, Black-headed Grosbeaks.I
now can drive the approx. 9 hrs to the event. Hopefully next year, some of you
can join up with me.Dan Kendrick
