Thanks Daryl for the post! Dan and I added one more species , a Junco, at our
feeders after you left. Susan and I always enjoy hosting our birding friends
for Sparrow Day and 47 species is a good list for October. None of us will soon
forget the sight of the American Bittern flying up from the hayfield!

If you didn’t make it to the annual Sparrow Day gathering at David and
Susan Raines’ home, you missed a stellar day of birding! We totaled 46
species with highlights being a late Cape May Warbler, Marsh Wren and great
looks at a Sedge. However, as everyone knows, there is nearly always a
surprise at the Raines’ place and today didn’t disappoint. While walking
through the field across the creek, Ed Talbott flushed and quickly identified
the American Bittern pictured below! We haven’t confirmed yet, but this may
be a new record for Buchanan County? Many thanks to the Raines for their all
of their hard work and hospitality!
