My kids watched Star Trek on TV, but even with my passion for Science
Fiction, so much of the series depended upon special visual effects.
Like Star Wars, the plots often seemed to be pulled from old Western
Magazines and had been dusted off and horses traded for personal
rocket ships. In Star Wars, which I'm more familiar with, the Empire
ruled, and we had beautiful young Princesses to rescue. And Greed was
still very much alive and active. I always envisioned a TV series
where we had invented some Super 200 times faster than Light,
overdrive. In that future we would have ended all war, kicked
Capitalism in the butt and driven it, along with its number 1 boss,
Greed, clear out of our universe. We would then send out teams to
explore our Galaxy, rescuing other emerging Life Forms who were
struggling with many of the same issues that had nearly destroyed
Earth back in 2076. But I guess that Positive, Peaceful programs
would not stimulate viewers. They would probably all go to the Old
Professional Football Channel, and watch reruns of the Seattle Sea
Hawks.

Excellent rant here and I agree with every bit of it.
When I think of man's progress or lack thereof in becoming more civilized, I
often look to Star Trek wherein the population of Earth and other planets
eliminated poverty and learned to live together. True, Earth did experience
more wars and genocide before coming to it's collective senses, but come to
our senses we did.
There are a few episodes of Star Trek in which planets are applying for
entrance into the United Federation of Planets. In order to qualify for
membership, planets must have resolved their differences and lerned to live
together in peace and harmony.
So, the way I see it, we humans are not making progress toward being allowed
entrance into the Federation, we are regressing.
