Dear Colleagues,
I have been a participant of the ETNI list for many years. I
joined because I was happy to find a forum to exchange ideas and take part in
lively, sometimes heated – but usually polite, discussions. Since the
inception
of the HOTS Literature Program these postings have, unfortunately, taken a
decidedly nasty turn.
I feel that it is an act of hubris to insinuate that a
teacher who has difficulty or finds fault with the new program is incompetent;
whilst blowing your own horn. While I respect Ms. Yashar’s right to express
her
opinion; I have found during my career that the great teachers are quite
sensitive to the feelings of others and act accordingly – with respect. They
are most often quite humble; a great teacher brings out the greatness of his or
her students. Great teachers do not look for accolades; they strive to propel
the young people to fulfill their own potential.
It saddens me that this list; which I believed was founded
as a helping hand to English teachers all over the country has turn into a slap
in the face for anyone who does not tow the party line. I am very disappointed,
I really do expect better of my peers. I am sorry that we can no longer agree
to disagree.
With respect,
Ariella Kopels
