no politics, just something about the importance of knowing English. (I hope you can read the article.) http://www.haaretz.com/blogs/diplomania/after-mastering-the-abcs-of-israeli-politics-yacimovich-s-new-challenge-is-the-english-language.premium-1.473827 It starts like this: On Tuesday afternoon, Labor Party chairman Shelly Yacimovich spoke at the Mount Zion Hotel in Jerusalem at the Jewish People Policy Institutes annual conference. For a quarter of an hour, Yacimovich presented her socioeconomic doctrine. Nothing was new in the content of her speech, but one thing was very different: she spoke in English. Ladies and gentlemans, Yacimovich began. Like the dozens of people sitting in the audience, most of whom were Americans, I began squirming uncomfortably in my seat at this jarring grammatical error. Yacimovich plunged on, reading out her speech at dictation pace, with her gaze fixed to the words on the printed pages in her hands. Yacimovich, an exciting and engaging orator when she speaks in Hebrew, disappeared when she spoke in English. All of a sudden, the charismatic leader turned into a monotonous lecturer at a boring university course. After she finished her speech and hurried to escape the auditorium, I spoke to some of the audience members who had heard her. Like me, they were unpleasantly surprised. Its important to be able to speak well in front of a non-Israeli audience, said one man. She didnt leave the impression of someone whos ripe for national leadership. ************************************** ** Join ETNI on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/31737970668/ ** ETNI Blog and Poll http://ask-etni.blogspot.co.il/ ** Etni homepage - http://www.etni.org ** post to ETNI List - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** help - ask@xxxxxxxx ***************************************
