[etni] Another LD option

Hi,
I'm surprised that no one mentioned the following option: replace the various
recording devices MP3, 4, 5, or CD (and worry about hidden files, or the next
new technology that makes these obsolete before we catch up with them), and
much more time effective.
Almost all schools today have computer labs. It is possible to copy and paste
any digital file (produced in WORD), into a text reading program. Several of
these programs are available FREE. Not only do they read the text, but the
kids can control the reading speed, the size of the text, its color, the
background (these options are very helpful for dislexic kids). If the Ministry
sends an email with whatever text needs to be read, or posts it on a secured
website (like the school website), it can be downloaded and pasted into the
text reader in as long as it takes you to click 'copy' 'paste'. If, during the
test, the computers are disconnected from the Internet, there can be no
commuication between the kids taking the tests (unless you're naive enough to
leave them their mobile phones).

Not only is the text reader good for national tests, but since the teacher
prepares his/her class tests, quizes, hw on her computer anyhow, the text
reader can be used to read all of these, including the option of the kids to
download it to their home computers and do their homework with it. Today many
textbooks come with CD's that include text-based exercuses and/or other work
to accompany a textbook. These too can be copied and pasted into the text
reader. True, the reader has a robot-like voice, but if the kids use it
throughout the year, they soon get used to it. It's no harder than getting
used to listening to a Brit or Aussie accent if they're used to Yank English.

This is a tool that all LD kids should be using and the sooner, the better, so
let's get up-to-date here.

Renee
