Translation of Army terminology is always difficult and fraught with pitfalls. In addition to everything else, British terminology is not the same as American! A Brigade is a "Hativa", which consists of three or more 'gdudim'. So the Jewish Brigade was probably more a Hativa than a Gdud. Also, sizes and definitions change over the years. "Divisia" is just bad Hebrew - Hebglish. On an aside - A "Tat-Aluf" in Hebrew is a Brigadeer General in the USA, but in the UK, just a Brigadeer! Richard Richard Steinitz - LPA Group P.O. Gdud is problematic -- Sizewise, it is today's American battalion and UK rehiment, but Hagdud HaIvri -- was the Jewish Brigade, which is larger. You can get these translated through google. I have made a whole lexicon for the English teacher of military terms. And, it is ALWAYS being updated and corrected. _____ Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 11:30:02 +0300 From: richard@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [etni] Army language To: etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Dear Marge A "Gdud" is NOT a division - it is probably best translated as a batallion, even though common useage is Regiment. A Division is an "Ugda" - about ten times the size! rgds Richard Richard Steinitz - LPA Group P.O.
