I have a Kindle and I love it. Unlike the new Nook, the Kindle is black and
white, but so are most of my books ;-) Since you can't use the 3G
connection to download books in Israel (I believe it's on AT&T, though I
could be mistaken and it's irrelevant), I got the WiFi-only version, which
is cheaper. I've been able to download just about everything I've wanted to
read (apart from The Wave...) -- certainly all of the new books are
available. Book prices are normally slightly cheaper than the print
versions and a lot cheaper than what the print versions would cost you in
Israel, even if you could find the books. I think that my Kindle, including
a leather cover with a built-in light (highly recommended, as the Kindle is
not back-lit, which is great for your eyes, but means you can't read in a
dark place without a light) and shipping cost me something like $225 total.
It was delivered directly to my house and took something like three days(!)
to get here. Adele, if you remind me, I'd be glad to bring it along so that
you can have a look at it the next time we meet.
Note that the Kindle application for PC is free and you can download books
from Amazon directly to your computer and read them from there. The same is
true of Kindle for iPod/iPhone/iPad if you have one of those. However, I
don't like reading from my computer or my iPhone because my eyes get very
tired. Reading from the Kindle is more like reading from a book than like
reading on a computer screen.
