The ETAI Newsletter, December, 2010 Hello again, Back at the keyboard after wrapping up the Winter ETAI conference, I'm here to report to those of you who missed it, that it was definitely worthwhile devoting a vacation day to attend. Hosted by the Foreign Literatures and Linguistics department at Ben Gurion University, we enjoyed a delightful day of interesting sessions on widely varied topics in English teaching. Dr. Judy Steiner spoke to us about "Redefining our classrooms in the 21stcentury", and provided us with much food for thought about the effective use of the technology which is second nature for our students. Professor Yishai Tobin's enlightening talk cleared up some misunderstandings about auxiliary verbs and their meanings, and Dr. Elisheva Barkon helped us understand what is required to get our students to be fluent readers, a common goal for all of us. We are grateful to the many teachers, who volunteered to give workshops and talks, which were enjoyed by all who attended. As usual, the publishers came out in full force, and there was a huge array of textbooks, varied teaching materials and games, and extensive reading books ? available for browsing all day. We also owe a great debt of thanks to Dr. Eitan Bar Yosef, in charge of the Masters programs of the Foreign Literatures and Linguistics department, for making it possible for us to spend the day at Ben Gurion University. We also thank those who volunteered to help us with registration and other tasks which helped to make the day run so smoothly. I add my personal thanks to Michele Ben and Laura Shashua for their input in decision making and planning before the conference and their invaluable help on the day of the conference in Beer Sheva. Just in time for the conference, the ETAI Forum, co-edited by Michele Ben and Amanda Kaplan, was published and handed out to members who came and sent to members who were not free to attend. It's a wonderful issue of abstracts from ETAI's 6th International Conference last summer in Jerusalem. If you are a member and haven't received your copy, be in touch with Marna at the ETAI office to have your copy sent to you. If you are not a member ? join! Coming up this winter, ETAI offers you 2 mini-conferences ? one on February 6th in Nes Ziona and one on February 10th in Har V'Guy. These mini-conferences are wonderful opportunities to participate in a conference "in your neighborhood", and are free for ETAI members. They also provide a chance to try out giving your first presentation, joining the many wonderful teachers who have generously shared their time and ideas with us at our gatherings. If you are not yet a member of ETAI, don't let another week go by without joining this wonderful community of English teachers, who meet and exchange ideas and experiences in English teaching. If you are a member, and have been standing in the background watching the active members take the lead, I warmly encourage you to come forward and take an active part ? writing for the Forum, presenting at a conference, or volunteering with the logistics of conferences, and see that you will be greatly enriched as you enrich others. All the best, Mitzi Geffen ETAI Chair ----------------------------------------------- ** Etni homepage - http://www.etni.org ** for help - ask@xxxxxxxx ** ** to post to this list - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** -----------------------------------------------
