In response to Zehava's questions regarding her grandchildren in schools with few native English speakers... I can understand your frustration and even though my daughters were in an elementary school with a good show of English speakers, there were frustrating times. We also have to understand the teachers and the pressure on them to keep large classes in control and meet the mark with the majority. So the teacher, often for lack of other practical options, teaches to the middle, leaving the strongest and weakest on the sidelines. At best, she/he gives them some individual worksheets or reading. My honest suggestion is to supplement with some after-school "homeschooling". This can be reading storybooks aloud and then doing some creative activities about the book like puppet theater, drawing, role playing characters, or any relevant book task. Do some of it in the library for a varied venue.Take the kids on a local outing and let them draw what they see and write their own "book", including cover page, text, etc. Take them to English-language shows. Play English-language board games. Be creative and let the kids have fun with English so it's not seen as punishment. Of course, there are workbooks that can be used, too. Use them sparingly so the kids aren't bogged down with more busy work like they get in school. By the way, my granddaughter is being home-schooled after being in a 1st grade class of 38 didn't work out. I'm helping out when possible and last week took her out to Yamin Moshe where she chose what to draw and decided on texts for each. I spoke with her in English but she wrote the text in Hebrew as she's learning to read and write in Hebrew now. English will come next!
