We have to remember that the English taught in schools is EFL. It's not meant for English speakers. The usual policy of making English speakers sit in the English classes, do the work and the tests etc. may seem pointless, but I guess there is not much else to do with the few young children who don't need those particular lessons. I would recommend following your own program for teaching your grandchildren, and give them work to do on their own during their English classes. [The child with reading difficulties may actually benefit from learning to read along with the rest of the kids.] I recommend a book that I used with all my girls - Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. It brings them up to an American third grade reading lesson by about lesson 80, and each lesson just takes minutes. It can be used with native speakers, I wouldn't recommend it for children just learning the language. One child is 10 and has reading difficulties. What books, program do you recommend? The younger child is 7 and although she does not have reading problems she is not being challenged. What do you recommend? It is a real problem.
