**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org **** From: Valerie <gidyakar@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Let's get things straight! "Now English is not TAUGHT, and the emphasis on projects proves it" The above quote was written by "Anonymous" in etni Digest #200. A protest must be made here, in order to put the scene straight.. At ETAI a year or so ago, we had a very timely talk given by Professor Frederika Stoller on Content Based Language Instruction (CBLI). Her article on the subject was then published in ETJ. We all teach through the CBLI approach, to a lesser or greater extent. If we didn't, the classes would be utterly boring and unmeaningful (and we know that this is not the case in our English lessons, don't we?). Projects are the outcomes: the visible , audible proof of our students' learning. SO let's not condemn the projects. Let's learn how to do CBLI in the best way possible, bringing in language awareness and appreciation along the way. If students know how to "grapple" with a text, how to deal with relevant questions and how to give account of themselves in the foreign lanuage, they will be able to cope with any text presented them. English IS taught, and teachers seem to know "what to teach" even if, as yet, they don't know what is to be tested. Perhaps an ETAI- sponsored CBLI forum could be set up, with meetings at each conference and online chat through the year. We could ask Frederika to be our 'patron' or 'sponsor'. Perhaps others can contribute ideas along these lines, too.
