ETAI is getting better and better!
Newsletter 22: July, 2009

Dear Readers,

This is the last Newsletter of the year, written the day after the Jerusalem
Conference.

The Conference was, as expected, an excellent event, with a ‘buzz’ to it
that happens at all the best conferences. I didn’t get into any sessions
myself, except for plenaries, because of ETAI meetings of one sort or
another, but I heard a lot of good feedback about them. The exhibition was
well attended (well, it could hardly not be, as it was strategically placed
in the corridors on the way to sessions!), the main auditorium was spacious
and comfortable, and the arrangements for lunch and refreshments very good
indeed. Congratulations to Susan Bedein and her team, and to Marna as
always ably managing registration, as well as to the brilliant group of
orange t-shirted ushers. For the first time at this conference we were able
to take payment by credit card, which was very convenient for all concerned
(further evidence for the ‘ETAI is gettng better and better’ trend!).

At the Annual General Meeting, Mitzi Geffen was voted in as (Vice) Chair.
It works like this: Mitzi will work as Vice-Chair of ETAI for the coming
year, while I continue to function as Chair for my second year of office. In
July 2010 she takes over as Chair, and I become her Vice-Chair for the
following year. In 2011 we vote in someone else, who will work as Mitzi’s
Vice-Chair for a year, before taking over from her as full Chair in 2012.
And so on. So the Chairperson always in fact functions for four years as
either Vice- or Full-Chair. (Am I making myself clear?) This is how it
works at IATEFL, and Susan Holzman suggested we adopt the idea at ETAI: it
seems like a very helpful, supportive, system.

Meanwhile, over the summer Micki Zaritsky and Ann Shlapobersky will be
working on a new website, and on a distribution list of all members, so that
we can send you things by email instead of snail-mail. Watch this space!
In the next newsletter I hope to announce a new web address and facilities!
Valerie Jakar and her team are working on a call for papers and registration
forms (already!) for the International Conference in July 2010, and Debbie
Lifshitz and her team are looking for sponsorship, so that we can make the
International Conference as attractive as we can, while keeping down
conference fees for members.

Even these hard-working people will, I hope, find time to take a rest and
enjoy some vacation! I wish the same for all of you reading this
Newsletter, and will do my best to practise what I preach!

Penny Ur
ETAI Chair
