----- Original Message ----- From: byk - byk@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: cheating Dear List, I have to tell a story about cheating. Years ago, in a school in the south, I was given (who else wanted it) a 10th grade class of non-readers. The aim was for them to sit the 3 point bagrut in 12th grade. (This was the time before modules. Well, first we learned to decode, and then we worked very carefully to build up language skills. I never said they would be able to do the bagrut, only that they would learn a lot of English, and if we got to bagrut standard, great. If not, we had still gained a lot. One day, talking about tests and cheating, I mentiioned that in my school in England we had the honour system. "What's that," they wanted to know, and I explained that th teacher came into class, gave every pupil a test, and walked out, tell ing us only the time when the exam would be over. They were very excited about this idea, and wanted to try it out. I explained that they must be prepared to accept very low marks, even 20, 30 or 40, but that these marks would be THEIR very own grades, acquired all by themselves. To cut a long story short, this is how we did all tests, till the end of the year. Their final test was the unseen from the thne 3 point exam - for which I allowed them 2 hours, and they all got between 70 and 80, with some getting higher grades. You have never seen a class prouder of its achievements than this one was. Admittedly, it wasn't a very big class - around 16 pupils, if I remember rightly, but it can be done.
