Subject: funny street signs etc
One of my favourite classroom activities is reading instructions for use on
different packages, usually translated directly from Japanese or Chinese or
funny street signs. Maybe other listmembers will send some in.
Here are 6 for starters:
1. near Jaffa gate in Jerusalem, "Maavar lanechim" is translated as "Beyond
disabled".
2. Ashkelon has a street named after Ana Prank
3. Luckily, it also has a street mis-spelt as Rehov Pines רח' פינס
4. There used to be a one-word English roadsign for the exit to the train
station in Tel Aviv that said "Rakevet".
5. On a menu in a fish restaurant in Ashkelon, "mana acharona" was
translated as "the final dose".
6.in the same restaurant, "kaved off" was translated as (no, not heavy
chicken, better still) "respect the chicken".
