HELP! I just discovered that my computer mysteriously deleted
all of my e-mail messages

Dear Maxine and all -

after this happened to me again (probably the tenth time) this summer I just switched to a web-based mail service (gmail, provided by Google). Since that time, all my mail is stored remotely - at the mail server - and not on my local machine. I can access it from any computer using a regular browser - no need in a mail client program (can you imagine a PC without MS Outlook? I've got one!).

You are all familiar with Hotmail - the web-based e-mail principle has been with us for a decade. What had always stopped me from using it was the fact that to read mail, I had to be online. Now that I have a dedicated DSL line this is not an issue.

There was also another consideration: speed. On a 56K line, you really had to wait till the next message loads (I used to go make me a cup of coffee and come back to find the next message "almost there."). Now with 1.5KBit download speed, this is hardly an issue either.

Google, Yahoo! and Walla provide huge free mail storage space.

If you have a DSL line - go for web mail. You never lose any mail.

And - no, I have no idea where your old mail is. It is most probably there - Outloook has a nasty habit of archiving your old mail without really asking your consent. look for .pst files on your hard disk.

Best regards -

Lev
