From: naomi epstein <naomiepstein@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: more about english in norway I'm corresponding with a teacher of the deaf from Norway and although we haven't been discussing the situation in regular English classrooms directly, there are a few things I do know: * Norway is a large country geographically speaking but has a smaller population than in Israel. I believe the number of pupils in a class is not large as commuting in Norway is difficult because of the terrain and harsh weather (months of darkness too!). * They begin learning English at the age of 6. * They have the advantage of English not being a new alphabet written in a new direction. * Children with hearing losses that study in regular classes get INCREDIBLE support services so I assume they supply similair services to other "special needs children". I'm sure that has a positive impact on what goes on in the regular classroom! * They use a lot of technology, lots of access to computers! * They have oil money... naomi epstein ----------------------------------------------- ** Etni homepage - http://www.etni.org or - http://www.etni.org.il ** ** for help - ask@xxxxxxxx ** ** to post to this list - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** -----------------------------------------------
