I had a similar experience helping students interpret a Hebrew poem by
Rachel.

I was working in the library and offered my two bits to the high school
students trying to understand the famous poem.

They came back the next day to say I got it all wrong - their teacher said.
I guess there was some canonical interpretation imposed from on high, so
none of your gut feelings. This was in the 90's. Maybe Hebrew lit has
advanced since - or not? Then I merely had a B.A. in English lit. Since my
M.A. , literary criticism has evolved to allow a multitude of
interpretations.

When I teach poetry I like to relate it to their world, bringing in popular
songs that treat the same theme, trying to get them aware of the depth of
feeling in a well-written poem.
Everybody likes a good story. My son said that he preferred the storybook
textbook far better than the endless unseens. How can we teach them to
appreciate a well-written story if we take the fun out of it by dissecting
it to death. Maybe the bagrut exam should be to write a short story or poem
of 200 words on the theme of...
