I was working in the library and offered my two bits to the high school students trying to understand the famous poem. They came back the next day to say I got it all wrong - their teacher said. I guess there was some canonical interpretation imposed from on high, so none of your gut feelings. This was in the 90's. Maybe Hebrew lit has advanced since - or not? Then I merely had a B.A. in English lit. Since my M.A. , literary criticism has evolved to allow a multitude of interpretations. When I teach poetry I like to relate it to their world, bringing in popular songs that treat the same theme, trying to get them aware of the depth of feeling in a well-written poem. Everybody likes a good story. My son said that he preferred the storybook textbook far better than the endless unseens. How can we teach them to appreciate a well-written story if we take the fun out of it by dissecting it to death. Maybe the bagrut exam should be to write a short story or poem of 200 words on the theme of...
