Are you sure the date is on the LEFT side? I have always taught that the date is on the right, under the writer's address.

Please note that the two addresses in a formal letter DO NOT COUNT in the
word count. Words are counted in the BODY OF THE LETTER only.
Similarly, the formal letter should be constructed in such a way that it has
an introduction. a main body and a conclusion in addition to two addresses,
a date (left side), and appropriate opening and closing greetings (Dear Sir,
Yours sincerely / Yours truly NOT just "Yours").
Students should relate to the topic in a sensible way and use the
appropriate formal letter register.

You will prevent valuable points being lost if you make sure your students
are aware of these points.
