Dear coleagues,

I read all the letters about the 4-5 pointers and I believe the one that
Dov Bloom wrote should be the model, more or less. I would like to refer
to Kathi's letter where she states that 3 and 4 pointers end their English
studies at the end of 11th grade.

I think that constantly pushing the kids ahead of their abilities
means that they are always getting low grades. It is too early to do
Module C in 10th grade, too early to do the project and the oral bagrut
at the beginning of 11th grade and it really makes no sense at all for
davka the 3 and 4 pointers to loose out on an additional year of English
in 12th grade. Why? 4 pointers may go to university and need English.
Maybe some 3 pointers will too. Why deprive them of a year of English?

In 10th grade they don't have enough English for Bagrut. The fact that
"they don't have to study for the exam" is misleading. The more English
they know, the better the results of the exam will be. The principals of
the schools don't understand this and they think that because "the kids
don't have to prepare", they can take the exam early and get it out of the
way. It just doesn't work that way. They have to know as much English as
possible to do the exam properly precisely because they can't "prepare".

The same goes for the project. They have to read unsimplified
sophisticated texts in order to do a proper project. Why do it so
early? They also have to know how to speak. This exam should be done
sometime before Pesach of 11th grade, the earliest.

And yes, they should ALL be studying English in 12th grade at least until
the winter if not all year. They need English for life.
Why deprive them of a whole year of studies?

 All the best,

 Miriam Greif
