Hi Leonie,
I use a diagram of a heart to teach spelling.  I draw a heart, put a y in 
the middle with the vowels dancing inside the heart around the y.  Vowels 
love y and protect the y so that whenever they are near the y the y is 
strong as in plays or days.  When there is any other letter next to the y  , 
which is not next to anyone who loves her, goes away and is replaced as in 
tries and flies but not buys.
