----- Original Message ----- From: Esther Revivo - estherrv@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: the 3 pt. bagrut Shavua tov, and good luck to everybody going back to work this week! I agree with Jennifer when she said, "The 3 point exam gives them something to aim for." When I began teaching English 32 yrs. ago, Pinchas Bechler, z'l was my Inspector. He saw me teach in a "masmam/ masmar" class. I asked him why these kids need English as their Hebrew skills are so poor. His answer was more or less, "Israeli parents see English as an elite subject that opens doors for them, and so they aren't willing for this subject not be taught to theikids. Hence, the MOE feels we must give it to them, albeit at a very basic level." Today, I feel it serves another purpose: There are pupils (some of whom in my school I believe could benefit from but cannot afford an "ivchun,") are not clear 4 pointers. They're "iffy" -- somewhat between 3 and 4. They COULD squeeze through C,D and even get an 80 plus on their oral exam. They flunk on E but the other grades pulled them through the point 4 bagrut. These pupils at my school are made to complete their 3 point so to ensure their teudat Bagrut and only then are they allowed to try for the 4 point exam. This was until the new glorious HOTS business which changes everything, sadly is now about to change things . Why not renew the old style literature questions not tied to HOTS? se la vi-- that topic's been milked to death and whether we like it or not HOTS is here to stay. We peons have no say in the matter. (MY opinion.) Until now, I do believe as Jennifer said, the 3 point has served a purpose. Being the international lingua franca, even a salesperson earning minimum wage at a store for tourists has benefited from doing a 3 point exam. (All those simple English phrases they needed to study in B for the postcard may help them on the job.) In any event, have a good week folks with a smooth procession back to work!
