----- Original Message ----- From: sbshai - sbshai@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: the so-called tziun shnati In response to Bari and Devori's comments on this issue, I'd like to say that many of us wish the situation were as forthright as they've described! Bari explains the necessity for a tziun shnati, which is, of course, theoretically sound. The problem is that the real-time situation does not usually match the theory. No matter what we tell them, students still expect a "magen", and herein lies the problem. Changing the name from magen to tziun shnati has not resulted in a parallel change of mindset on the part of the students, their parents and even the school administrators. Regarding the latter point, it seems to me (from everything I've heard) that the situation Devori describes is quite exceptional. Only once in my long career have I been challenged about too wide a discrepancy for overall high tziuneh shnati given to a class of hard-working but not strong students. The case in most schools is that the challenge goes in the opposite direction -- i.e., how can teachers give a grade that's more than a point or two lower than a student's average on matkonot and unseens. Thankfully, I work in a school where the teacher's opinion is respected and he/she is the ultimate decider ; however, this is not necessarily the case in other schools where teachers are frustrated about the involvement of the administration and they are made to feel stingy or unable to give a good grade, with no regard given to the trouble they take to devise a system for fair grading. Perhaps an ETNI poll might ask whether a committee of teachers shouldn't together decide the students' grades in questionable cases! At least, this would remove the (unjust) onus placed on the individual teacher.
