Instead of doing that, why don't you get them to write a scene that doesn't
take place in the play? Here are some examples that I give the pupils to
write as a post-reading assignment. In your case, you can ask them to act
them out afterwards and then you can grade them on their English as well
which is meant to be 20% of the final grade.
1. Write the conversation that took place between George and his
father, Steve when he went to visit him in prison.
2. Write a conversation that takes place between two of the
Kellers' neoghbours (NOT the Lubeys or the Deevers,) when they hear that
Joe Keller has been exonerated in the trial and will be returning to the
neighbourhood.
3. Following Joe Kellerâs suicide, the police come to investigate what
happened. They call in the Kellerâs neighbours, Dr. Jim Bayliss and his
wife, Sue and question them about the reasons for Kellerâs death. Write the
conversation between the police officer and the Baylissâs.
4. Kellerâs death causes Steve Deeverâs case to be reopened and he is
released from prison early. Steve goes to live in New York to be close to
Anne and Chris and to forget everything that happened. Eventually they
persuade him to go with them to visit the old neighbourhood. Write the
dialogue that develops between Steve and Kate when they see each other.
