I once asked if teachers had ever calculated the number of hours they lose to other activities each year. I make that request again. I think it is important for the Ministry and the Minister of Education to know exactly how many hours teachers have at their disposal, particularly in High School, and what is expected to be taught in those hours. I also believe that most teachers find that calculating the yearly grade is becoming more and more complex, and that it sometimes doesn’t reflect a student’s knowledge. This also seems to be the problem with the ‘F’ literature exam. Is it possible that the rubrics for marking set an impossibly high standard, and that this accounts for the low grades of excellent students. I don’t think, however, that the log is the answer, despite the fact that students learn a tremendous amount from it. However, one can’t escape the fact the the submitted logs are rarely done without some outside guidance and help. I don’t mean that the students cheat; it is just that they get help with organization and writing. I don’t believe this compares to sitting alone with an exam.
