Dear All,

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions on and off-list
regarding "coursebooks". It's clear we have a problem that needs to be
addressed.

David wrote about his Haredi pupils who can barely read a text at the
300 word level. David, I know many pupils like these in the schools I
work in. There are some remedial coursebooks on the market, and some
good ones, too. Ironically they are not "approved" by the MOE and do
not appear on official book lists which means the schools are not
supposed to buy them; I have begged and pleaded and a few principals
have found ways to order them. I find it ironic that on one hand we're
supposed to do our best to address the needs of each pupil yet we're
up against a wall to get suitable books for them. Not all teachers are
capable of writing their own books/booklets as you have done.

Summing up, I continue to be plied with practice books as the
publishers wait for approval of a new program; they have to make a
living, right? And there are practice books for everything nowadays.
But these are not coursebooks!

I'll continue and do my best to come up with solutions for each class
There ARE some very good old books out there. But we'll teach English
and not Bagrut!

Laurie
