Firstly, I'd like to say that clearly there was a misinterpretation of my
email. It was read out of context and I can only assume that by Esther's
introductory remarks ("I believe that I was not the only teacher who was
highly insulted by Hdar Yashar's scathing comments") that many teachers
(and I hope not too many) in ETNI land misread what I wrote.
In that regard, I can only apologize. And I do sincerely apologize. I am
not a grand-stander or even scathing by nature or a mud-slinger by any
stretch of the word. I am a humble teacher (as much as I can be) and I have
no intentions of ever insulting any teachers out there.

Having said that, I would like to clarify. I was not mud-slinging! But I
do think that as teachers we can all agree that there is such a thing as a
good teacher vs. a bad teacher or even a great teacher. We've experienced
them as students ourselves many years ago. It is simply a fact.

I certainly wasn't pointing any fingers at any one. I was simply
responding to the fact that a teacher -- as described in the tutor's
original email blaming "the system" -- wasn't being taught "All My Sons"
and was merely being given a recording to listen to. Are you telling me
that you agree that is great teaching?

It's a general statement... some teachers are good and others are great.
Students remember the great ones. The great ones make a huge impact.
This is all common knowledge. But according to what the tutor in her
email described, I hardly call that great teaching.

But having said all that, I have to say, while there are issues with the
"system", I am really sick of hearing about how awful the new Literature
program is. You wrote:

"I believe that common courtesy demands we keep our comments here on
ENTI related to facts and politely aired opinions sans mud-slinging at
other hard working teachers"

How about the hardworking people at the Ministry who are doing their best
to create a curriculum that suits the diversity of this great country (from
secular to Ultra-Orthodox; from impoverished to great wealth; from African
to American to Asian to Middle Eastern)? So mud-slinging (as you kindly
put it) is okay against the MOE and all it does, but to the teachers who
can't be bothered to teach properly is not?

My comment was not aimed at all teachers of English in Israel, nor was it
aimed at all teachers who are against the program. It was simply aimed at
the teachers described in the email sent by a tutor who was annoyed that
her student's teacher wasn't actually "teaching" the literature and blamed
the program for that. How is that mud-slinging or even scathing?

I am sad that my email was so misunderstood. C'est la vis. And so it is.
Dare I say that perhaps the MOE is misunderstood as well?

Again, my humble apologies for any misunderstanding of my original post and
to anyone I may have insulted. I am sorry it was not clear about what I
was speaking or intending.

Shavua Tov to all!
