From: "sbshai" <sbshai@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: Log vs Test Of course you're right, Kobi, in thinking that both the log and preparation for the test require a teacher's good work; it's just a matter of choosing which option is better for your particular situation (your students, your school and yourself). You're also correct about the inequality of the grading for the log and the exam: There's no doubt that the exam grades are bound to be lower than the log grades, but it's still a question of selecting which headache you prefer. For some of us, the pressure that we'll be under as the sole determiners of our students' grades is just to big a burden to bear! Sure, we've heard the rumors that the exams are designed to force teachers to choose the log, but at this point it's merely conjecture whereas the problem of pressure from students, parents and the administration is a glaring reality. The English staff at my school would love to pick our favorite pieces to teach, but we'll work hard to make the required literature (in the option we choose) enjoyable. Personally, I'm looking forward to the challenge of new approaches to old material. (I'd rather work on motivating students to find meaning in the lit. -- for which they certainly have to think -- than worry about an appropriate method for dealing with the HOTS strategies!)
