Hello! I’d like to comment on several recent ETNI posts. Teaching
literature has always been of supreme importance; those who refrained
from this denied pupils the supreme joy English study offers.

Having said that, our staff feels utterly defeated. Our principal has
given us a puny 4 weekly hours in 10-12 grades which is simply not
enough. Why doesn’t the MOE REQUIRE teachers of 4 and 5 pointers be
given 5 weekly hours? Having only four, I am teaching ‘Bagrut,’ in yud
rather than English and my principal couldn’t care less. (This as long
as the grades remain good, which aggravates our staff to no avail.) I
am teaching for a test instead of TEACHING ENGLISH and it galls me!

I can’t help wondering if the great number of teachers positions now
open is due to Oz or HOTS or both. I am a supervising teacher for
student teachers from a local college and must mention that the
majority of those upcoming EFL teachers have far below the necessary
level of fluency necessary to teach bagrut classes. These, sadly, are
the novice teachers of tomorrow. Additionally, I personally know at
least 10 veteran teachers who are planning to (or already have)
retired from disgust with HOTS literature. And no, I haven’t touched
the textbook once this year as I simply have no time!

Our entire h.s. EFL staff is participating in a superb advanced
tikshuv course with Adele Raemer. However we cannot utilize this newly
acquired knowledge in our high school classes for lack of time.  What
a sorry state of affairs. Is anyone out there listening???!!

Please dear supervisors (and dear Judy,) require our schools to give
us the hours we so desperately need instead of leaving the decision up
to principals to grant hours as he sees fit!!
