Subject: Re: On Teaching Literature

I want to rephrase what I said in my previous email as I've just
reread it and realize that it might be misunderstood as something I
did not intend to say...

The HOTS does not exclude any of the Stephen's points for learning
Literature. It is not counterproductive to teaching appreciation of
the art form. I believe it is in the hands of the teacher to teach
appreciation while implementing HOTS and I believe that the HOTS
program is a well-rounded program to get even the inexperienced
teacher teaching literature in a well-rounded manner.

There is so much room to teach other pieces (if you're teaching the
log) and my students have been so inspired, that some have looked up
Maya Angelou on their own time and discovered an extraordinary woman
who used her artistic talent as a writer to help change the world. If
that's not appreciation, then what is?

I am not opposed to what Stephen wrote (contrary to what it may have
seemed in my previous email since I expressed myself ambiguously), but
I'm a bit tired of hearing everyone rank on the new literature program
the Ministry has enforced. I commend Ministry on ensuring that
literature gets taught in schools and not passed over or
"under-taught".

Just saying.
