Once upon a time, students in Israel were taught to and expected to care for
each other and for others in general. In those days I saw no bullying. And
students were truly concerned for all their classmates and this carried over
into their life outside of school. To the detriment of the whole country,
the baby was thrown out with the bathwater when the emphasis on the
individual was mandated. IMHO, the topic of the year next year should be
concern and care for one another. I remember reading with my students the
story of the girl in NY who was murdered outside her apartment building and
not one person, secure in their building, phoned the police. My students
thought it was a made-up story. They just couldn't really believe that such
a thing could really happen. But now it has happened here in Israel.
People watched that man being beaten and drowned by thugs. I can't believe
that nobody had a cell phone!
