Make your own "story"
Yesterday, a teacher at Leo Baeck High School in Haifa went on a one-day, Yom
Kippur fast in Jerusalem to broadcast the message that it is time the country
did some serious self-examination about what we have been doing to education in
the last decade, at least. Leo Baeck and WIZO pupils, teachers and parents also
went up to Jerusalem to conduct a special service of prayer. The service
contained excerpts from the text you can find in the links below.

Of course an action like this, and action in which no blood is spilt, does not
attract public attention. But it is our job to teach the press too. We have to
exploit the fact that the moral power of our position, our committment to the
future of our children and our country is a far more potent weapon in the long
term.
If each district, each school, takes upon itself to hold a day of "prayer"
along these lines our message will come across much more stronly. We can see
how, for the first time that I recall as a teacher in this country, public
support is rallying round us. This support eventually has to have an impact on
the clerks from the finance ministry, on a minister of education whose
loyalties change according the hat she is given to wear (she could not even
respond to the claim made on the radio that a professor earns 26,000 shekels a
month for working six hours a week!). It also does wonders for keeping our own
spirits up as we fight the good fight.
Do look at the link. Demonstrate your own powers of leadership by setting up an
assembly involving your own local community. Adapt the text to suit your needs,
and draw the attention of your local community to what this conflict is really
about.
Yours nonanonanonanon,
Reuben Moses

ps. Just to show how much the press DOES need to be educated, there is now a
pupil from youd beth who has also started a hunger strike. Excited, HOT news
came to interview her for the scoop, completely ignoring Nir, also from Leo
Baeck, who so far is the most long-standing person on hunger strike. He has
been on hunger strike for eight days now. But a story is a story is a story...
