[etni] Police is/are

Hi,
I tried out "police is" vs "police are" on 'Google fight', the website Avraham 
suggested and got the following results:

"police is" 17
"police are" 16

So if usage has anything to do with correctness, it looks like they are used 
pretty much interchangeably.
