Hi to all- May 27, 2012 Recently, I have begun teaching a 21 year old young man who has just completed his army service. He is working now, trying to earn money to travel to the USA sometime in the fall. It turns out that he was a student of mine when he was in 7th grade. A lot has happened since then. He said he didn't really study to well during high school, both in Hebrew subjects and of course English. he wants to start from the basics in English, but every time I mention tenses/ helping verbs/parts of speech, his eyes glaze over. (He doesn't know this information in Hebrew either.) Of course I have told him that the English language is more than grammar, and that he will only learn what he needs to function in English.( I made the analogy of the carpenter who needs to use a hammer and nails in order to create a beautiful piece of furniture.) So I have decided to approach this from the direction of content. To that end, I am looking for stories/articles about interesting places/travels, traveling in general. In addition, I will work with him on functional spoken language that he needs, such as what to say at check-in at a foreign airport, etc. Do any of you have easy-to-read /understand unseens/stories to suggest? The Survival English series, while just right content-wise, is MUCH too hard for him at this point. TIA, Margie -- Margie Cohen-Jackel M.S.S.A, MAJEd. S.
