Dear Colleagues,

I have been a subscriber to the ETNI mailing list for a number of years and
in that time I have found it to be an invaluable source of information as
well as an outlet for my gripes. It has proved to me often that I am not
alone in the way I feel and I have established contact with many who share
the same outlook as me. In addition, it has provided an open forum for a
free and useful exchange of ideas and opinions. We may not always agree, but
the discussions, on the whole, have been intelligent, articulate and
interesting.

Although I was never under the illusion that this was a closed forum only
read by teachers, I was, nonetheless, shocked to read a post yesterday sent
by a subscriber who identified himself as an inspector and contained what I
can only describe as a ?dusting off? of a fellow subscriber who had sent a
mail describing his dilemma in the light of union sanctions against the
Bagrut project. To make matters worse, the inspector made it known to one
and all that a copy of his mail was being forwarded to Dr. Steiner, the
Chief Inspector of English.

I feel that this was highly unethical and inappropriate behaviour. The list
can only be useful if all subscribers see themselves as equals. It exists to
provide a forum for teachers to express themselves and discuss matters,
which are sometimes highly sensitive, with their peers. If the inspector in
question had issues with the poster, then he should have written him a
personal email. If he wanted to make his views known to everyone, he could
have written a separate email in which his position as the first
subscriber?s direct school inspector was not mentioned.

It is vital that we maintain an atmosphere of free and healthy debate in
this forum. Posts such as the one that we received yesterday do nothing but
spread an air of fear and suspicion, a feeling that Big Brother is watching
us.

I hope that people will be more considerate in the future and suggest that
perhaps a new set of forum etiquette directives could be drawn up to prevent
these type of posts.

Have a good day,

David Graniewitz
