Teens keep reading if books are relevant to their lives EastBayRI.com - August 15, 2006 EAST BAY - While formulating a required summer reading plan for her high school students, Camille Frankel decided to do things differently this year. "Some summer reading programs drown the kids. I didn't want to do that," said Ms. Frankel, head of the English Department at Portsmouth High School. So instead of picking one or two books for each grade level, she went with just one title for everyone: Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America." "The whole school read the same book," she said. "Different classes and different levels will be using this book as a jumping-off point for teachers. They can design a plan to do whatever ? an essay, a project, a test." But there was another reason she chose this particular book, in which journalist Ehrenreich went undercover to see if she could make ends meet by taking on various unskilled jobs, each paying $6 or $7 an hour. "It's a good read, it's a quick read, and it's something relevant in their lives right now," said Ms. Frankel.
