*You Can Do It* is a supplementary workbook that teaches pupils explicitly
and systematically to read. The book is written for pupils who have learned
the consonants
and are ready to start their reading adventure. Alternatively, it may be
used by remedial pupils in the older grades.
The book comprises 16 units teaching one vowel sound, vowel combinations, or
digraphs per unit. Systematically the pupils build up the sounds that they
need for
basic reading.
Each unit consists of a story, exercises, a fun activity and comprehension
strategies. The same types of exercises recur throughout the book preventing
possible
confusion and allowing the pupils to focus on their reading. The
comprehension strategies change as the pupils advance.
The stories in the units are designed to enable pupil enjoyment from the
start and consider both the younger and older pupils. Every 1-2 sentences
are depicted
by a picture adding the visual stimulus and excitement to reading. The
stories are simple and the words are accumulative throughout the book
allowing the
needed repetition. All vocabulary words in the stories are limited to high
utility and high frequency words.
Extra stories serve as a review of the sounds learned. A glossary is given
for any new words that may appear in these stories. The extra stories serve
as a
pleasurable source for additional reading practice.
