I happen to believe that being a teacher is more than just getting paid for an 8-4 job. This doesn't take away from my professionalism, if anything it enhances it as it makes me more responsible. If I considered it a regular job, I'd have left teaching a long time ago. The fact that I do have an ideological commitment to what I do helps me overcome all the difficulties and hardships that I have had to endure (nasty pupils, unscrupulous headmasters and the joke of a salary slip that I bring home each month.) If I had a "normal" job, going on strike wouldn't bother me. "Normal" employees harm their employers when they down tools by cutting into their profits. (And "normal" unions have strike funds.) The difference is that our employers don't care. The Jerusalem Municipality is rubbing its greedy hands with glee because of the fact that it has to pay our less money this month which will help its growing debt. I agree that we deserve a lot more and not only in monetary terms, but I can't avoid my guilt feelings. You're getting foreign religious concepts mixed up with professionalism. We teachers, even the females, aren't nuns or Buddhist priests. We don't have to suffer to be good teachers. We are trained, educated, academic professionals and we must demand and expect, without embarrassment or apologies, suitable living wages. If we don't demand respect, we won't get it!
