I gave my 10th grade an assignment to write a short story (120-140
words, what else?) that ends with a specific sentence from the
literature they are studying. (not my original idea, taken from jack
p.'s "romeo and juliet" unit.) as usual, most of them did very well -
they seem to have gotten used to this crazy teacher who forces them to
write poems and stories.

but we started talking about creative writing and it seems that in NO
OTHER SUBJECT are they ever asked to write anything creative. not in
lashon/chibur, not in sifrut, not in anything! i think that is
horrible!

i hope that at least in elementary school they did some creative
writing (i didn't think to ask them.)

so here is another thing where we are at the "cutting edge" - maybe
after the HOTS the MOE should start working on this. (and i am not
saying that we should get paid for this - it is such a basic part of
teaching.)
