i met three teens at a jerusalem pool today who were from norway. two girls
were 16 years old and one boy was 13 years old.
i heard them speaking to each other in a foreign that i didn't recognize so i
asked them if they spoke english. they were able to converse in english and
were happy to share information about their english education.
i found out some very interesting information that i would like to share.

the first thing i learned was that they were told early on by their parents and
teachers that learning english was a very important part of their education and
they respected that advice.

1. one girl said that her mother placed her in front of the tv for 1/2 an hour
from the age of 3 so that she could get used to hearing english. she continued
listening to english programs and although she eventually learned to read
norwegian after a while she removed the norwegian text from the tv screen. in
fact, both girls shared the experience of removing the text from the screen.
2. both girls said that they watched a lot of english tv and of course used the
internet as do their friends.
3. the girls said that they and their friends read english books for pleasure.
4. in high school they are asked to give short english presentations several
times during the year.
5. the girls said that english was fun and felt comfortable speaking with me in
english.
6. i asked them what subjects they liked in school. the girls told me they
liked language especially english and the boy told me that he was dyslexic and
he liked soccer and sports.he, i might add, he also felt quite comfortable
speaking english but jumped into the swimming pool somewhere during our
conversation.

i was very impressed with the ease in which they expressed themselves and the
sense of confidence they displayed in speaking english with me.

what a joy. they were delightful!
