Some linguists claim that it will eventually disappear. How delighted the students of EFL will be. Meanwhile, At some point, usually in 5th grade, I start introducing all the 's'es together; 3rd person, plural, 's and s'. There are a couple of nice exercises in Grammar Helper 2 for the two latter. (it doesn't' matter that the book is intended for 6th grade. It is just as useful for any higher grade) However I usually find short passages, which I adapt to my purpose, which is to find and identify the various 's'es. Barry, I shall try to find where I put the exercises, and forward them to you, particularly after you so kindly reminded us that the carefree days of the summer holiday are fast running out! They don't differentiate between the different "s"es. No matter how many times you tell them that third person, singular in the present simple gets an "s" they don't remember it. I've found myself dealing with this issue with 5 pointers in the 12th grade. > Now here comes the reason I am writing. Many *hard of hearing *students don't hear the "s". It is very often, one of the first sounds that disappears. Now close your eyes and imagine learning English without the "s" sound...... > We are about to embark on a new school year. If you are going to have a hard of hearing student in your class and you work in the North, please contact me. If you are in other parts of the country, Naomi Epstein can advise you.
