From: Judi Granit <judiavi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: JHS project - idea for next year Just thought I would share with you something we did in 9th and 10th grade. After receiving some fantastic children's books through the Books for Israel project we wanted to do something in return for the institutions that donated books to the school. We decided on getting our pupils to create children's books to send back. They chose a children's book that they were particularly attached to as children, one that had been written by an Israeli author in Hebrew. They had to translate the book into English (they worked on this in class) and then produce illustrations (drawing, computer generated or digital photos) not using the original illustrations from the book (this, they did at home). On the back page they wrote a short biography of themselves...i.e. This book was translated by...... with a photograph of themselves. I was surprised at how motivated the kids were, they LOVED the project and the resulting books were delightful. Translating the stories gave them the chance to learn new vocabulary and practice language structures we had learned over the year. When the kids brought their finished books into school we had a small exhibition and they felt a great sense of pride as they read each other's creations. Needless to say we plan on repeating this project in the future as it was such a positive experience, but next time we will either add them to the books in our own school library or donate them to an elementary school. I'll take this opportunity to wish you all a great summer. Best wishes, Judi G.
