**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org **** From: Anonymous Subject: Our Fault? In a way it was our fault. We allowed ourselves to be convinced that the NBA was the way to teach our students English. Not only is it clear now that it wasn't and isn't, but when a problem arose we are left holding the baby, with not one word from the Inspectorate. The policy seems to be to allow teachers to let off steam - the long vacation is here and by the time the school year begins, all will have been forgotten. The problem with the Bagrut was inevitable - and here is where it is our fault. Gone are the days where we knew what to teach and knew what was to be tested. Now English is not TAUGHT, and the emphasis on projects proves it. Somehow students are supposed to pick English up within the huge amount of information that they are faced with. They didn't succeed, and obviously so. The whole situation is much more serious than just allowing a "factor" or giving an easier moed B. The problem is that there is no Bagrut that can be devised that will test what students were supposed to have learned, because the enlightened NBA framers saw the result as "English", picked up through the much more important skills of searching and information collation. It didn't work and we should have seen it. Many of us did see it, but we were too afraid to make our voices heard. Now we are all paying for it, but especially our students.
