Here are the present poll results:

Total votes so far: 59

Should ETNI accept job ads which ask for "native English speaking
teachers" only?

YES - 59%
NO - 41%

(We will include the comments that were added to the poll board - below)

*note - We feel that polls of this type should have an influence on
deciding ETNI policy. Right now, it is ETNI policy to accept job ads
which stipulate a "Native English Speaking Teacher" requirement.
However, if the majority of voters in the poll vote against accepting
such ads, we will change ETNI policy accordingly.
This depends though that at least a "minimal" representation of ETNI
members take part in the voting process. (By minimal, we mean at least
500 participants, out of the 1,400 present ETNI subscribers to the ETNI
list)
So please vote and make yourself heard.
Go to - www.etni.org or www.etni.org.il and click on "Go to ETNI Poll"
- to vote. Voting continues until August 16.

COMMENTS from the present poll board:

Nest? 18.7.2004 (6:59)
A job notice asking for a highly proficient English speaker would be
enough. All the previous comments have said it all and I agree.

Job Ads 17.7.2004 (7:31)
Most ads we see in Hebew ask for a native speaker's level. At the
interview you see if you have a native speaker, an excellent English
speaker with the added quality of gumption, or someone who is wasting
his time. I think that's fair.

Political correctness 16.7.2004 (16:20)
As others have said, it is best to say "native speaker proficiency". The
person doing the hiring can interview and accept or reject the
applicant at his/her own discretion, but if the ad is limited to native
speakers 1: it risks offending and discriminating; 2: the person hiring
might be missing out on some very good talent who is sufficiently
proficient in English, despite not being brought up speaking English,
and could have amazing qualifications that would enrich and enhance the
learning, and otherwise might not have been recognized!

NEST or non-NEST?! 16.7.2004 (15:54)
Lev has convinced me that there's a problem here and I accept his
"elegant" solution...ads should call for native level proficiency and
take it from there. I might add, however, that except in very
extraordinary cases, I wouldn't place a non-native speaker in a native
speaker class!

ETNI Job Ad 16.7.2004 (14:38)
I was in two minds before I read the comment by a teacher from Russia.
Now I feel we should definitely not encourage discrimination by
accepting ads that are only for "native speakers". The employer should
be able to judge the suitability of the candidate by his/her ability to
teach what is required.

I would prefer to see the request written
"Seeking person with English skills at native speaker's level."
=============================
pronunciation and accuracy 16.7.2004 (13:59)
There are times when a teacher must have native speaker skills. I
wouldn't demand to see a person's birth certificate, but one should be
able to "pass" for native in terms of speaking, reading, writing and
quick processing in English.
I teach in high school and too many students are oblivious of English
vowels, which are the basis for reading and writing English. One of the
minimal requirements for English teachers should be proper
pronunciation.

Is it okay to place an ad for basketball players requiring them to be
tall? I for one, want only a native speaker teaching my native speaker
children. If I turn it around and ask myself if I would be offended if
I applied for a post as a Hebrew teacher and were told that only a
native speaker could qualify, I believe the answer is no. We are
allowed some definition of qualifications without being accused of
being racist or anti-semitic.
