Hi everyone, Regarding the back and forth about the lit. program: I have to agree with David Hyatt and others and say that there are obvious advantages to teaching the new lit. modules. I also have to agree with Jennifer, Esther and others and say that there are going to be very serious problems with implementation; Like Esther, I teach at an Ulpana where we have only four measly hours to teach these students (if we even get those, which sometimes we don't). Even the strong 5 pointers have a hard time with only four hours AS IT IS, and then add the lit. on top of that???????? How??????? What about the weak four pointers?? We have numerous students who are actually 3 pointers but insist on doing 4 points because 3 points "is not worth anything". Their words not mine. What do we expect when these students contact the higher education institutions to ask about their English requirements and get the following answer: "It's better that you have a failing grade in 4 points than a passing grade in 3 points". They are willing to work their %#%$#@% off to pass the 4 point modules and to their credit usually do. They get 55's 60's and possibly 70's. I, like Jennifer and Esther have gotten the usual line: "if they can't pass so and so then they shouldn't be doing so and so". Fine, whoever says that is welcome to come to my school and convince my students to do 3 pts. The bottom line is, where does the new lit. module leave those students??? I will answer my own question; many students who were 4 pointers and moved up to 5 pts. will now go back to 4 pts. and many weak 4 pointers will have no choice but to go back to 3 pts, just to avoid the lit. Is it all worth it?? I may have a solution: Who remembers the good ol' 6 point exam? You know, the regular 5 point exam that was and the additional literature exam to follow? I myself did this exam back in the day (shows you how old I am J). Instead of revamping the module system to include the new lit. program, why not just add on a new module at the end? That way whoever is able and capable will be able to do it without hurting those who are not and cannot. Something to think about.
