Dear List and frustrated teahers,
I would just like to ad my two pennies' worth to the ongoing discussion of this
summer's bagrut.
Many of your letters imply that the exam itself was on a much higher level than
in the past. Let me beg ot differ. I have a number of highly intelligent
students, ranging from eighth graders to university professors. None of them
found the text difficult. All of them found that many of the questions were
probelematic, to say the least, and they kept asking themselves what the
examiner wanted the answer to be, and tried to answer according to what they
believed or guessed was wanted. They found it very frustrating. One woman, a
professor of physics who is often in the position of creating exams, said she
felt that the exam had not been constructed according to correct examining
guidelines.
I have given the exam to various friends, all academics, whose English ranges
from near perfect to native speaker, and they all had the same reactions. They
couldn't understand what was being tested.
Come on teachers. It's time to make formal protests. Those of you who are
going to be at Etni - get together and make a plan of campaign. You have
devoted your lives to making a difference. You do it for a pittance. No
teachers in Israel are more dedicated. Stop the powers that be from making a
joke of your contributions.
