   Hi all,
Much has been said about the recent Bagrut and I want to bring up once
again, the
Module A issue.
Firstly, the listening comp, was better this time and read slower but not
slow enough. My students
were better able to manage it.
The chart was terrible. It served but to confuse these weak students. It
discussed raising money for
a children's hospital and then raised the question of how the children would be
helping out and the right answer
seems to be that they will participate in the marathon. This forces the
students to second guess themselves
which is the last thing we want (I'm sure Aharona will agree with me). They
asked me how a very sick child could
possibly participate in the marathon???? THEY ARE RIGHT!!!! So, many of them
got it wrong. I say that when we
design a test like that, we are our own worst enemy. We have learned that the
weak students need the 1pt. or
Module A as a stepping stone to continue on to the supplementary exam or the
following modules but how can we
expect them to have a positive attitude towards this when they get a low grade
on the FIRST exam ????
Much of this test needs to be revisited just as the other modules need to
be as my colleagues have been
pointing out. The subjects presented should be very familiar to the weak
students (cell phones for example).
Something they can relate to immediately. They should just have to deal with
the English and not struggle with
trying to comprehend the topic. Also, I know that the format was in keeping
with the NBA, still they should be asked
straight forward questions and not be given puzzles.

I welcome your comments.

All the best,

Nathan Singer
