Amen! Our job is to teach English and then test to see that the students mastered the material taught. We are not the ones responsible for giving them a "well-rounded" education, etc. We have to teach them to read accurately, spell properly, punctuation and capitalization according to normative English. We have to teach our students how to write properly syntaxed sentences and how to speak and understand English. Of course we should make it enjoyable and use authentic texts, which can be from literature, lyrics, recipe books or American drivers manuals, and they should recognize the difference between an encyclopedia and a catalog. I don't know about all of you, but I don't have enough hours for teaching these necessary skills. Test questions shouldn't be tricks and demands to judge nuances, which they don't catch well enough even in Hebrew.
