Hi Etniers. It has been mentioned rather often lately that teachers who prefer the exam to the log do so mainly because they are afraid of pressure that might be put on them from parents, students and the administration. I would like to comment that with the requirements of the log and the scrupulous calculation of every single assignment that is being graded I don't understand how such pressure is at all possible. All you need to say is that there is no such a thing as getting something for nothing. Once you show whoever it is that puts pressure on you all the grades the student got and the way you calculated his final grade, how could they possibly ask for a change of grade? The system of nocking grades up started from the way parents and students have always been used to bargain about the magen marks (tsyun shnati) here there was a vast scope for bargain and pressure because the teachers were supposed to "shield" the student and help him get a better grade than he has been likely to get in the exam. A teacher who gave his student a lower magen grade has always been considered as harsh and unfair. Therefore I think that giving a magen is far more problematic in terms of expected pressure than giving the bagrut grade where all the information is straight and above board. Needless to say that I have been doing the log for two years now and there has been absolutely NO pressure from anyone to nock up grades (least of all from the students who all got charts with the precise calculation of their grades.)Food for thought!
